My two favorites books on fasting

Fasting is basically the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, for a period of time except water. Sometimes, when is conducted under medical observation for investigation of a problem, usually hypoglycemia, extended fast has been recommended as therapy for various conditions by physicians of most cultures, throughout history, from ancient to modern.

As part of our digestive system this is one aspect of the body’s struggles that we can readily control; it is the key to having or losing health.

Some people use this method as a therapy to lose weight or cleanse the body of toxins. WebMD explains how this detoxification process work and what are the risks to any possible health.

The human body is a marvellous creation, a carbon, oxygen combustion machine, constantly burning fuel, disposing of the waste products of combustion, and constantly rebuilding tissue by replacing worn out, dead cells with new, and fresh ones.Glucose is the body's primary fuel source and is essential for the brain's functioning.

When denied glucose for more than 4-8 hours, the body will turn to the liver for glycogen, a storage form of glucose, to be used for fuel. At this point, the body will also use small amounts of protein to supplement this fuel.

This fuel will last for up to 12 hours before the body needs to turn to muscle stores of glycogen, lasting for a few more days. During fat catabolism these toxins are released into the blood stream and present the body with a second challenge for their elimination.

The body will continue to use fat for as long as there is fat to consume. During the first day or so, the body uses its glycogen reserves, the sugars that are the basic energy supply. After these are depleted, the body begins using fat.

Fasting can, to a degree, reverse aging. Sometimes, and for a longer period of time can even regenerate the pancreas.

Growth hormone is only manufactured under certain, specific circumstances: for about one hour immediately after going to sleep and then only if the blood supply is rich in arginine and ornithine but contains few other amino acids; it is also manufactured during heavy aerobic exercise that goes on for more than thirty minutes; and growth hormone is produced at an accelerated rate when holding back from food.

There are lots of books on this subject.

I suggest to read about the benefits and possible dangers of this detoxification method of the body:

"How and When to be Your Own Doctor" by Dr. Isabelle A. Moser with Steve Solomon.

The book is a magnificent and extremely informative publication that weighs the theories of naturopaths versus traditional medical practice.

"How and When to be Your Own Doctor" was written to help educate the general public about the virtues of natural medicine and to encourage the next generation of natural healers and might be just what you need to go ahead or give it a try.

"Like Upton Sinclair and many others who largely failed before me, I am going to try to convince you of the virtues of fasting by urging you to try fasting yourself. If you will but try, you will be changed for the better for the rest of your life. If you do not try, you will never Know."

Another amazing book I recommend is The Fasting Cure written in 1910 by Upton Sinclair. This is a fascinating classic book that turned American upside down when he wrote about it in Cosmopolitan Magazine.

The book includes several cancer healing testimonials, with caveat for cancer patients by Healing Cancer Naturally Detoxification & Healing Cancer and Other Illness.

The author describes his personal extensive experience and that of others with the challenges and amazing health and curative benefits of the fast. The book is instructive and (occasionally) amusing and includes several cancer healing testimonials attributed to this technique.

From my experience in reading natural health classics, I have to say that How and When to be your Own Doctor and The Fasting Cure are two of my favorite volumes.

This is a natural part of the healing process and should be welcomed. It is a turn-of-the-century classic on healing diseases naturally.

The books are free and are formatted in a convenient PDF format so that you can view them on your computer or print them out for a comfortable reading.
